Hi! A close friend 44 years old was in an car accident on April 19 02. She is still in a coma (7 months), called by doctors "captive coma". First she was in a "vigil coma". I am looking for any information or support to help her family. Amaira Cordero, Amaira at supercable dot net dot ve

I survived a coma for two weeks in 1988. I had been adventuring up a steep thin cliff falls. I fell some 180 feet bouncing off rocks the way down. I awoke in a coma which I came too some two weeks later. I attribute much to God and good fortune. However, I am grateful to my family and friends for the constant talk and contact. The Love surrounded me the entire time. I do believe there is a strong correlation. Via con Dios, love your info, Jersey Jim of the Appalachians.

Hi! I'm from the islands of Kiribati and I'm seeking help for my dad who is in a coma for one and a half months now. Our doctors here don't know for sure what caused his coma but they are suspecting some sort of infection which has affected his brain. We have very poor facilities here in Kiribati and a full medical investigation is not available. I am hoping that someone out there might be willing to help out and suggest any places that offer coma recovery programs that might help my dad recover or wake up from his coma. His doctor says that they have treated him for all the possible causes for his coma and everything is controlled now. He says my dad is in a stable condition now and all we are waiting for is for him to come out of his coma. Which is why I'm looking for places that have coma recovery programs, especially in Australia, New Zealand and around the Pacific region, since these are the only regions that our government would be willing to pay our dad's airfare and medical bills to. Please if anyone can help us, write to me at: d_apisai at yahoo dot com. Thank you. Danietta Apisai (Kiribati, in the South Pacific)

My 46 year old brother suffered a brain aneurysm, that burst. he was taken to the hospital and that hospital was not equipped for trauma patients. the doctors said there would be a 3 percent chance that he would live through transport. he did. then he had to have surgery and they again gave him a 3 percent chance and again he made it. my brother was in a coma for 4 weeks. he was on a vent for 2 weeks. he is now out of the coma and slowly but surely recovering. we never gave up hope. my brother is a fighter and we knew he could fight this. the doctors said this is a miracle. i know my brother is a miracle. in 1975 he was in a auto shop explosion. he was burned 90 percent of his body. he never gave up hope and neither did we. a few years later the same brother was in a dynamite explosion and lost his left foot. again he never gave up. he is a pure miracle. i just want to say if you have a family member or loved one in a coma please do not give up. we stood by my brother's bedside day in and out. we kept talking to him and rubbing his arms and legs. we prayed, laughed and cried, but as a family we stuck together and never ever gave up. he is still in the hospital and everyday getting stronger. we know we still have a long way to go, but with support my brother will get there, iknow this. keep hope.

I would like to say hello to everyone. I am one of the co-founding members of the Coma Recovery Association of South Florida in 1980. The association was formed by two families whose children were in coma arousal therapy, and I was their therapist. For 18 years I worked with many individuals of all ages at all levels of coma recovery along with their families, predominantly as a Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapist in home health care, a support person, an advocate, and a good friend. I have a wealth of experience that is quite broad from my own years of work and from the many families who never gave up and forged ahead... and those individuals trying so courageously to rehabilitate... whom I cannot say enough good about. I may have some opinions that could be helpful for some of you.

I would like to give some words of hope to those who are experiencing a loved one in a coma. Two years ago this week, I posted a message on the prayer list for my sister. She had been in a serious auto accident and was in a coma and it was very questionable as to whether she would live or if she did live, if she would ever be normal again. We didn't have any positive signs for months. No smiles, no hand squeezing....nothing. She went from a "sleeping state" to a state where she opened her eyes but never focused on anyone or never showed any response. Her feet stayed high in the air over her head. She then progressed to a stage where she hollered out constantly. It was extremely difficult to see. We were told to consider putting her in a nursing home although she was only 37 years old with two boys. After 3 months (on Christmas Day) she suddenly began speaking and acting as if she knew she was in the world. It was still a long road and she had to work hard, but today she is the most loving, caring Christian lady you would ever meet. She lives on her own, she drives and she loves spending time with her boys. There are definately memory losses and she doesn't remember many things about her life and life in general, but she is very alive and the joy of our lives. Please, if you have a loved one in this situation, DO NOT give up hope. We had every reason to quit believing and we didn't. God brought her through this and he will do the same for your loved one. Don't let anyone make you believe otherwise because one day can be completely different from the day before! God Bless each of you and know that we are praying for you.

Dear all, my 55 year-old brother, Steve Dunn, is comatose, on a ventilator and G-tube. Steve is diabetic and had 2 wounds on his left foot that became infected with staph & strep. Toxins were released into his system that caused multisystem organ failure on May 24, 2002. Steve amazed all and was beating the odds not only by surviving the night he was first hospitalized, but by making slow and steady progress day by day. However, on June 8 Steve's left lung burst and he went into cardiac arrest. A doctor and nurse were present in his room at the time and worked tirelessly to revive him after nearly 30 minutes of CPR... Subsequent EEG's detected abnormalities where there once were none. A neurologist told us the portion of his brain that was damaged was his consciousness... Steve was transferred out of a Cincinnati ICU into a nursing home in Bellbrook, Ohio on July 8. We prayed he would be accepted into DRAKE...a specialized care facility; however, Steve's medical insurance had lapsed and became a major roadblock. I continue to pray for Steve's miracle recovery and would very much appreciate it if you would add Steve to your prayer list. He is not only my brother, he is my best friend... Thank you. Denise

One of my really good friends has been in a coma for 6 months and 8 days i believe... im not sure.. what his level was or what it was called... what i do know.. is a tahoe hit him.. and it was going pretty fast... he hit his head when he hit the ground and fractured some bones in his body...i remember they called him dead on the spot... well the thing was they opperated him.. he swelled up.. his facial feachers.. his fingers...his head, everything... then they had to operate him again.. cuz he had brain damage... and all the internal bleeding. They took off half his brain the part he didnt use.A person only uses 10 of they're brain or close to there.. so it would have been ok ... it was really serious the doctors thought he was going to die. They would say it but they said to still have faith he started getting better... time passed and they finally would let us in to see him... well we needed permission or whatever but still... he can hear and kinda blink his eyes.. but theyre closed you know or he'll yawn and strech and sneeze i think... well what i want to know is what hes thinking right now... like what hes going through.. i read in some posts.. ppl r saying that they dont remember u... but david does.. because one of the times i went to visit him.. i tell him hi david and my name.. and ill hold on to his hand.. and he'll sqeeze it.. or he'll kinda smile.I was with him for about 45 min.. and i was just talking to him.. and telling him to blink his eyes once for yes.. and 2 for no... i was telling him about things we use to do together.. or funny things that happened.. saying things like.. he was looking even better then he did before... i was so nervous to talk to him at first.. i felt as if i was going to step on something i wasnt suppose to. When this little machine went off.. iwas freaking out! his dad said he was getting excited... and to press this botton so it could stop, about 5 min later it went off again.. his dad said that the rate of davids heart was increasing it was at like 240something and it was at like 89 at first.. i dont know.. i think its really sad if he doesnt remember any of us... hes an 8th grader.. 14 years right now.. well i just want to know what hes thinking and how its going to be when he wakes up... is he or is he not going to remember us.. are we going to have to remind him?

UPDATE Michael is doing alot better, he is beginning to make progress. He turns his head left and right when told to and looks at different items around the room when told to. The therapists are starting to use a yes-no board with which he can answer about six questions before becoming fatigued. God is truly working miracles with him. Please continue to pray for him because every prayer helps. Hopefully Michael will continue to get better and be able to come home soon. We miss him very much. Thanks to you all. Hi, This weekend my best friend drowned whilst sailing here in the UK. She had no heart or breathing for about an hour and is now in a coma. She has come off some anti-fitting drugs (and is no longer fitting) and also has been taken off sedatives. The brain scan apparently shows no noticable effects. This episode has really cut me up, and has really torn my world apart. Can anybody give me some guidance as to what may happen next - and how I support her husband, who is very close to me! I would appreciate any help and advice anybody can give. Thanks Mark Crawford - potato_man AT hotmail.com - PS For those of you that believe please pray for Laura and ask the Lord to help her recover and offer great comfort to her family, friends and husband James.

On Feb. 9, 2002 my son Michael was in a car accident that resulted in severe tbi. The doctors told us he would not live through the night but he did, he had a few hard days during the first three weeks, his icp got to be 45-50 range on a few occasions. He survived that as well. He was then moved to an acute rehabilitation hospital and his doing great health wise. He is in what they call a persistent vegatative state. They are about to remove his trac which to me is a big step, he opens his eyes to noise but does not look to see where it is coming from. Sometimes when I look into his eyes I know he sees me. I have great faith in God to help him and I also have great faith in my son. The program he is in is an 8 week program he has four weeks left to make conscious awareness according to the doctors to continue to the next step. If not he will go the a nursing home. I am thankful to God for saving his life and not taking him from us ,and ask those who read this to please pray for Micheal to continue to get better. Also any info or suggestions to help Michael would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Michael's Mom Rosemary

I am just 24 years old and almost 7 years ago I survived a 3 month coma and TBI resulting from an auto accident I was in. On June 30, 1999 I suffered a TBI. I don't remember anything of the day it happened, only waking up from a coma two weeks later. Most of my memories before that day I'm not even sure happened just like most of my childhood memories and high school memories as well. My recovery was faster than normal since I wanted to get better. Two and a half years later I'm going to college in pursuit of a degree in graphic design. I've found that I don't think as fast anymore but I'm managing to do well. I lost a lot of friends who couldn't deal with the "new" me, but what I found out is they were not true friends at all. The ones who stayed and stood by me I appreciate wholeheartedly. In my college classes I'm doing well even when I think I'm not. I managed to keep up a 3.5 GPA for my first two semesters and am now starting to see things clearer. I want anyone who suffered a TBI to know that the hospital bed is not the end of the road for you, and that you are good enough, and now better than you've ever been. You are not stupid, you are worth it, and there is much out there for you to have in life after the trauma. Go out and see what's out there. I encourage you.

CRA Note: psychic posts are the type of post that we just cannot permit. Readers please be wary.
A suburb of Chicago is where I reside. The whole incident which caused my 3 week coma was heard all around the states. The year was 1999 when it took place and I was 19 years old. The city was Bartlett and the state was Illinois. The main reason why it was heard in most of the states was because the accident involved myself and a drunken driver. The drunken driver in this accident was an off duty police officer. A helicoptor flew up from the center of Illinois to pick me up and fly me down to a great hospital for brain surgery. A owe so much more than thanks to whom ever is out there and knows of this whole situation. I am still waiting today February 4, 2002 for my personal case to start. His personal case against the city took place a while back and he was convicted to 188 just nights in prison, he got out during the day to find a new job and pay us 10,000 for the car and 450,000 for medical bills but we still have not seen any part of that yet. If you have any other questions you can just e-mail me and I will attempt to answer the question!

In Aug. of this year I was called to the ministry. Recently, going to the hospital and praying for people in a coma has been brought to me in my thoughts. My question is, is this something that can be done, or do people prefer you to not interfere? If I am going in the right direction (I am concerned for their salvation) can they pray with me subconciously, and hear and understand what I am saying? Any insight or info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.. todd freeman

Hello Everyone, It makes me sad to hear about all the especially young people who are comas, but then again reading these comments also gives me new hope. My mother passed away with cancer 5 mths ago and now my father has had a brain hemorrage 2 wks ago and has not yet woken up. The doctors don't know what to tell us, but they're not very positive and have now decided they will not recucitate him, should his heart stop. He squeezes my hand and moves his eyebrows when I speak to him, but that's all. Still we're determined now that we're going to do everything in OUR power to help him recover. We know he wants to live, even with the pain of being without Mum.

He was in a terrible car accident the night before and went into a coma with a serious brain injury. I was able to go to the hospital and see him once but his mother wanted me out of his life. (There were many variables to the situation but I was a good kid and I loved him, we'd been together over a year). I was heartbroken but decided it was best to let her deal with her grief and if striking out at me was what she needed to help her cope, I stayed away and never saw him again. I was only 17 and I beleive I did the right thing. Since then, I have moved on with my life but I have heard hear-say that he can talk now and that he knows who people are. I always wonder if he remembers me and if so, does he hate me? And just today I found out that his father died and I wish I could be there for him. I pray for him and his family, they have had so much bad luck these past few years, I wish I could do something, but I think I would do more harm than good. I am writing this for closure.

My husband Michael and I were in a fatal car crash almost 7 years ago. He has been diagnosed as being "semi-comatose". The medical staff say he is "vegatative state". I don't believe any of this. Just this month (November 2001)I have been able to get my husband to stand with assistance and on Nov. 28, 2001 he took his first step forward. His left side is his strongest side and he has been moving this side since August of 1995. He is now slowly but progressively moving his right side. He has been more spontaneous with his movements and gestures. Less upon command movements. I have written in the guest book before and thought it was time to update our status. His TBI also has a brain stem injury added to it. I was told it was a contusion to the stem but no medical person has been able to tell me why this area won't heal in time. I have stood by Michael for these past 7 years because my faith in God and my faith in Mike are very strong. Please pray for us and hopefully soon I will be able to write that Mike has returned to our home. He tries very hard to open his eyes and this is one accomplishment I would love see happen for my hubby look at me again without me raising his eyelid for him. Anyone with any type of helpful information please email me, jes184 at hotmail. com Praying for all of you. GOD BLESS

Hello, my nick is KIM. I'm a 28-year-old girl and want to ask you something... I have a dear friend of mine who has been in coma, and now he is slowly recovering. He often has periods of despair and depression...I think he thinks he will never get out of this nightmare, and will never have a "quite normal" life. I want to give him some hope. So if there is someone who survived coma and doesn't mind to tell his her story...will you e-mail me, please? Can you please tell me how you went in coma, how long, how did you recover (or are you recovering) and how NOT TO lose hope and optimistic point of view? ONLY IF YOU WANT. THANKS! KIM

I am an elementary teacher & my video web page is located at www.SpeakersQuest.com/speakers/Best.htm, in the event that I can assist anyone in reaching their true potential/dreams, like I have been blessed to do, feel free to contact, because making the world a better place takes us all. Maybe if you can't assist me, you will know someone that can, thanks. My main objective is to activate, educate, motivate, stimulate, & validate that all individuals regardless of challenges (not disabilites) they can achieve their dreams. Wouldn't it be better if, teachers, address students in a positive manner vs. those legal negative terms, i.e., disabled, handicap, retarded, cripple, disadvantaged, etc. I promote beneficial & positive ethics. Also, please feel free to call my professional colleague, Michael Wolfe, Ph.D., at the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, if you doubt that this positive change will benefit our society. I survived a coma of 3 months in 1977. I wonder what will happen to those labeled negatively, when they are confirmed competent like myself? Shaun_Best_2000 at yahoo . com Have A Best Day! I just want to say that someone very close to my heart named Terry N. has been in a coma for 2 weeks and one day, due to diabetic complications. He is only 30 years old (tho' he seems younger to me). anyways, to see him laying there in this "vegetative" state, as they call it, not waking up and saying "wassup sister tracy!?"is so hard, i can't imagine the pain for his mom, and girlfriend , Lisa. I know there are other people out there now that are going through this too, or have gone through it, is he gonna wake up? Is that really the worst question I could ask if I really want the truth? Is he still in there? Please pray for us all, especially Terry. He would not be happy like this, he has too much "spunk".god bless to all.

Your site is the 1 helpful site I have found on TBI!!! My boyfriend was in a car accident 36 days ago, which wasn't his fault, and he is left with severe brain injury and remains in a vegitative state, although he does respond to some stimuli. Until reading this, I thought everyone thought his case was hopeless-I refuse to believe that. He is only 18 yrs. old and has his whole life ahead of him. The Drs. told us he wouldn't make it, he did. They said he wouldn't breathe on his own, he does! Thank you for your wonderful dedication to victims of so-called hopeless cases. You may be seeing Eric soon!

hello , my sister had a drug overdose on may 27 2001 when they found her they said the heart had been fibrillating for some time. they say she went at least 15 min. w/o o2. she stll remaines in a coma 12 days later. the docts have pretty much given up on her and are trying to push my mother and i to let her go. they say if anything she may progress to a vegitative state. right now her kidney (she only has one) and liver are improving. she has almost normal blood pressure her heart rate is strong and she does respond to pain stimuli. she also reacts alittle bit to light. when the pt moves her legs and arms she starts a lot of her own movement .the docts say it is nothing but we think she is definatly there and that she is fighting. whien my mom washe s her face she moves here head back and forth. last nite when my mother gave her a kiss on the forehead she moved her head. if we decide to keep her going the doc wants to put a trach and stomach tube in her and move her to a home. now i am trying to find a brain trauma team at a better hospital perhaps one that will try alot harder. if anyone knows of somewhere in the utah area could you please let me know. thanks alot for any support and prayers my email is glenl at excite . com

Me and my mother were in a fatal accident on August 21, 2000 which left her in a coma. My mother at being 29 yrs of age had abrain stem injury after following the accident. They flewher to Lubbock Tx, and there asn't much that they could do until the blood in hr head started o coagulate proporly. Well about 24 hrs later the doctors told us that the blood in her head started to coagulate so they were able to put a drainage tube through her head s it could releave some of the pressure on her brain. Now after about 3-6 months they sent her to a nursing home. She stll is in a coma but not as deep as she was in the beginnig, some nurses are telling me that we may have another mirace because sometimes not all the time but my mom will try to speak, like when we give her commands, she will try to raise her head uup when we try to kissher, so we know that she is not in as bad of shape as se was in the Lubbock hospital. And the only thing that you can do is be strong for your loved one and try to hang in there and pray, pray, pray, no matter how long it may seem, all you cn do is have faith and wait for miracles to happen. That's what I have done all along and it seems to help!!!! My mom has been in a comatose state for about 10 months already and she is improving day by day! If you have any questions at all just e-mail me at nowakc1218 at aol . com! And i will try my best to answer all of your questions! My name is Ashley and I am 14 yrs old. There isn't much to say, except keep the faith - whatever your faith may be.May your loved one recover, and may you survive the ordeal as a whole person. This is the first time that I have looked up 'coma', 'recovery', and 'head injury' on the web - and only because I had to in connection with a work-related project.20 years ago my 16-year-old little sister was injured in a traffic accident and ended up in a coma, followed by a more-or-less persistent vegetative state. I am still unsure how long it took before she 'woke up' - 4 months? 6 months? 8 months? As the very competent into on this site in fact reflects, the process is often very gradual and quite individual. I remember the time she laughed out loud at an anecdote I told her - the first indication that the damage to her brain was not total. 3, maybe 4 months after the accident I guess that was. I'm sort of glad I had not read what the experts have to say about such reactions in these pages then. I might not have been quite as confident that she would eventually recover and become 'herself' again, as she did - for all intents and purposes. My sister is still 100 percent handicapped, but she manages to have a pretty good life. She can walk and run (with some spasms), talk, bicycle and everything, she can just about manage her own one person household, and she is an intelligent and insightful person. However her recovery took many many years of terribly hard and traumatic work on the part of herself and just about everyone in her immediate surroundings, and it is very much an on-going process which will last for the rest of her life.It is a collosal task but there is no alternative.Focus on love, first, then survival. And may you be as strong as you need to be.

I had my TBI in march 2000, i spent 6 months in therapy after being in a coma for~1 month, since then i have gone back to try to go back to medical school i am presently auditing classes and still doing therapy, only unlike the normal route of therapy i do that part of the day once a week, twice a week i do neurobiofeedback (EEG) and also 2x a week i do intergrative manual therapy. I was kicked out of my all day therapy which i had gone to for 6 months for lack of progress, i am once again seeing progress in myself, my biggest issues have been speech and coordination. i sounded funny for a very long time(dysarthria) and the therapists told me i would NEVER be able to run again. Now after 2 months of NEW therapy i aam runnig and sometimes have houghts of perfect speech.

04/06/01my mother (58years old) went in for tests 3 weeks ago from last wednesday 04/04/01after breakfast they gave her some pain medication for her "headache" and when the doctor showed up to give her some tests they found her in a coma. straight into catscan to find that she had or has a major aggressive brain tumor. they operated immediately and she has been in a coma ever since. a week ago thursday we took her off ventillation expecting her to not last the evening. well she not only took to breathing on her own but she has been breathing strong on her own ever since. this sad sad event has come for me at a horrible time as i am without work and without funds so that i might be able to facilitate spending as much time as possible with her. as it stands i was unable to see her for two days in a row. when i returned yesterday 04/05/01 i noticed that she was without her feeding tube ( i figured it was being cleaned). when the nurse finally returned i asked about it and she informed me that they(my stepdad, and her doctors) had pulled it the day before. i had thought that "starving her to death" was not an option. it has since to my horror become not only an option but in her case is reality. i am not sure who i am hoping will read this but if you are reading this and could find it in your heart to correspond i would greatly appreciate it and promise to correspond in return.sir_svengoli at yahoo . comthanks for your time, justin

My wife was in a coma for 2 1/2 months and gave birth to our beautiful healthy baby girl about a 1 1/2 months into the coma. i know that might be a long time for some people's families or that might be just a flinch in other peoples situations but over all you have to have faith in life and God. everything in this world happens for a reason. i was in a coma also about 3 years ago so i have gone through this twice. both were not that long even though it felt like it but it makes you realize what exactly is important in life and that God is active in our lives, believe it or not, its up to you. just never give up!!!! This is a wonderful site. The Prayer List is a wonderful thing. It proves that you are not alone in coping with Head Injury and the endless hours of "Not Knowing". the hardest thing about a head injury is the "Wait to see what happens". After fifteen years of "Wait to see" I started getting impatient, and the discovery of your site has made coping a lot easier.

This is a picture of Lynnette. She was in a coma. She was unresponsive, and it was hard to see her like this, After all, she had just given me the greatest joy that I have ever known in my life. I prayed and held her hand, I brought a CD player and played our song, "looks like we made it" by Shania Twain. I brought our baby and laid him in her hands. I had to place her hands onto Joseph. I prayed that she could feel him. I cried, often I went at night when I could be alone with her. My Aunt came out from South Carolina to help me. I really needed it. I needed prayer for her. The doctor's were saying so many different things. Bad Things. One night a doctor told me to be prepared for the worst. I prayed so hard that this would not be. Thank You GOD for answering my prayers. And the prayers of everyone else that prayed for her.

Hello...Thank you for the info, it has really helped in our supporting our dear friend Jim and his family. He and his wife Marlene were in a serious accident two weeks ago, and he is still in a coma. Dealing with a bit of a fever, and has opened his eyes regularly this past week. He is a real fighter, and we believe that he will pull through this with flying colors. We will continue to say an extra prayer daily for his speedy and full recovery.Dan and Laura Lovett

I survived a coma of about 3 months or a week shy of three months. I've made a pretty good recovery of about 90% or 95%. I would like to assist others in knowing that they can recover, regardless of what the medical field suggest. They told me to never expect to go to school, I was 12 at the time of the accident, walk, talk, communicate because my arms were stuck/ glued to my chest, etc. If I can assist anyone in becoming a better human, please let me know. Have a great day!

Hi,this is a very useful and interesting site, really!I'm a girl of 27, very interested in scientific things and I've always been very curious about TBI and coma. My elder cousin was in a coma when he was 17, after a motorcycle accident. He was comatose for 20 days or so but his recovery was quite fast. I thought the longer a coma did last the harder was recovery, but I was wrong, it seems. My cousin only had some speech problem...like forgetting some words while talking, or calling something by the wrong name and so on. In one year he had already overcome big part of the problem. Now, 20 years after the accident, he is completely fine, only talking a little slowly.I have some questions...I would like to have answers from people who experienced it, if possible. Please, answer directly on this Guestbook, will you ?1. Are coma and heart arrest connected? I mean, if someone has 2 or more heart arrests during the trauma, will coma and damages be worst ?2. Are amnesia and speech problems the most common problems after recovering ? Or are there others ?3. Is it possible to know in advance what kind of damages or problems will the comatose patient have after recovering consciousness ?4. Does relatives and friends' talking help people in a coma ?Thanks!
Grazia

Update on my dad Chris.Since my last entry my dad has had his trachy tube removed and breathing really well without. His chest is now clear and needs no suctioning. They are talking about removing his nasal feeding tube and fitting a PEG into the stomach. The nurses now have my dad sitting in a chair for a few hours every day. They say he looks around him but whether he is aware of anything we do not know.He is being moved to a nursing home soon, they say they want to try and wean him onto pureed food, which is good, and they will make sure he is up in a chair every day amongst other patients while activities are on for stimulation.I would love to hear from anyone who is going through, or has gone through a similar situation. My Dad has been like this for eight weeks now.He still does not move, apart from facial movements and slight head movement. What can we do to stimulate him?Does anyone have any advice from past experience?

My Dad Chris is in a Coma after having a massive Heart attack, and has severe brain damage due to lack of Oxygen. This happened AUG 6th,2000.Doctors wanted us to switch off his life support while in the Intensive Care Unit. We refused! It is a miracle he is still with us as he died when he had his heart attack and it took 25 shocks to bring him back. They didn't think he would make it out of I.C.U. But he did! He is now on the acute ward, breathing for himself, he has a tracheostomy for suctioning. He opens his eyes and lately he actually seems to be watching us, the nurses have noticed aswell. They feel he is lighter out of his coma. He can swallow ,yawn, and slightly move his head. He is aware of touch and opens his eyes if you move him, or sometimes if you call him. He has fought Pneumonia twice, which Doctors didn't think he would. While my dad is fighting so hard to stay alive we are going to fight with him. Even when the Doctors are so negative!Where there is life there is hope! Never give up!Thinking about all other coma victims and families, we wish you all well!

Greetings! I'm an ICU/RR Nurse at The University of Santo Tomas Hospital, Espana, Manila, Philippines and currently doing a research paper about "The Physiological Responses to Music of a Comatose Patient" at the UST-Graduate School, Espana, Manila, Philippines. I find your website interesting and informative. The informations I have gathered are very useful in completing my papers. Do you have any additional materials which I can use for my study?Any guidelines on how to conduct this study? I would like to conduct my study in a correct manner. There is very little information available here in the Phillipines and online when it comes to this subject matter. Can you refer an authority on this matter whom I can forward my querries in the future. I'm really interested in doing this study since I believe that this will greatly benefit the comatose patients. Any help you will extend will be highly appreciated. Pls. send your responses to my e-mail address. Thank you.

The one love of my life, Dan Mullen, was involved in a motorcycle accident on 5-31-00. He was life flighted to UPMC, Pittsburgh, admitted in an unresponsive state, eyes fixed and dilated and placed on life support. Level 3 coma. After a week with no response whatsoever to pain stimuli or any other neuro response/protectives and increasing vital organ deterioration, the deciscion to place him completely in God's hands was made. This was the most difficult and painful place a family could be in. Dan took a few breaths of his own and in a matter of a few hours I held him in my arms as I kissed him goodbye for the last time. Dan had made me promise to never let him continue in the state he wound up in and although I wanted to keep him with me it was not God's decision for that to be. I still have so many questions about comas, and the wide degree of TBI's.Doctors can diagnose but cannot restore function that is permanently damaged. Sometimes our faith must help us to free our loved ones to go home. I sruggle now in my grief to find Dan's prescence in other ways..but my life was left on the other side of those trauma unit's doors. God bless all those who work there and give dignity and hope to all those placed in their care. They are human angels.

I have a friend who went into coma this past year. Her recovery is slow and recently I noticed that she was at a plateau in her healing process. I pray to God to help me find all the possible ways to help my friend (beyond my usual routine of holding her hand while praying , singing, reading, and talking to her, etc). God led me to discover a great book called "Magnetic Therapy: Healing In Your Hands" by Abbott George Burke, $8.95. It talks about five techniques in using your hands in a particular position and distance away from the patient (2 to 6 inches). The magnetism from your hands will help heal someone in varying degrees. It is definitely helping my friend since I started using the techniques four weeks ago. She has more range of movement and emotions. She still has a long road still to go to be completely out of the coma state and onto a full and complete recovery. Thank you Lord Jesus for all the healing you have let happen to her. Please Lord Jesus Christ let the healing of my friend continue so that she has a full and complete recovery. Friends at the Coma Recovery Association, please pray for her for a full and complete recovery.

I would like to connect with anyone who has a similar situation. My 33 year old sister (and best friend) has been in a coma since 06/08/00, two days after a blood clot traveled to her brain causing a stroke. She had a c-section (which probaly caused the clot) one week prior to this and delivered a beautiful healthy baby girl. She had surgery to remove the blood clot, and her doctor seems pleased with her progress so far.We are being told to "wait and see". There is damage to her vision. I feel so helpless, I want to be doing something to help her. I can't stand to see her like this. I am trying to be strong for my family, and I've been taking care of the baby with the help of my husband while working full time and trying to visit my sister as much as possible. I just really miss her. There is so much about comas I just don't understand......

I sustained a CHI on 5-10-91 in an automobile accident. The resulting coma was rated as level-1 by Dr. F. Epstein at the Aiken hospital. I am very willing to provide my testimony that God saved my life to youth groups and classrooms. Dr. Epstsin stated following my final MRI scan: "I take no responsibility for you being here. I did all I could to keep you alive; and the decision of your living or dying was out of my hands. A higher being is involved." I presently am a Senior in the U of SC system, work as a Rehab. and Support Specialist, and will soon begin worl with a young man who sustained a CHI in '99.

The point of my posting in this guestbook is to tell you that i have read the prayer request and have already prayed and will continue to do so for your loved ones. My 21 year old sister woke up when her son was 4 months old to check on him, and collapsed in front of his crib. her husband heard her fall, and went in to see what happened. She had a cardiac arrest and he could not resuscitate her. EMS arrived and resuscitated her after 10-15 minutes. She should not even be alive, but she is. She woke up, but she is only a shell of herself. She will answer yes, no questions periodically, and answer "fine", or "sick" when we ask how she is doing. She smiles and laughs at our jokes, but other than that, she is really just not there. We want to try a hyperbaric chamber, can someone please tell me if this will work. has someone been through this before or know someone who has tried it. You have a wonderful site!!I have known 2 people who were in comas. One was a dialysis patient and they said he wouldn't make it. We all prayed for him and his family. While I was alone with him I would do Reiki. I would also do Reiki with the family to give them the positive energy they needed. One night while I was at his bedside praying, he opened his eyes and said "Suesa, I can't leave right now, I have too much to do"! I told him he is soo stubern and held him in my arms. We all went home a few days later!! With the Dr.'s jaws on the floor!! The other friend had a anuerisym. Very bad damage to the brain. No motor functions. After 3 weeks she only had eye opening response to pain stimuli. The Dr.s all said she woud be a vegatable for the rest of her life. She was a care giver her self. Dr.'s said a trec and g-tube would be placed in if the decision was to keep her on the vent. No brain waves. She fought the hardest ever, left behind a 15yr old son, which we all have a hand in trying to guide him in the right direction. We prayed evey day for her and her family.Never stop believing in the power of prayer! But, remember, God is the one who makes the final decision. Keep the faith. Thank you for this site! I will be starting to do massage therapy and Reiki on more coma patients.Sue

In September, 1999, I fell into a coma as the result of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, a very rare syndrome caused (among other things) by a toxic lithium level. I was on a vent, had aspiration pneumonia, peripheral nerve damage, muscle damage and kidney failure. While I was in coma I had horrible dreams (delusions?) about hell, ghosts, nuns, and giant rabbits. I'm told I saw my guardian angel. The doctors, and even my priest, don't believe me. I was in coma two weeks and my recovery has been a very confusing time. I have some residual brain damage and walk with a cane. This has totally changed my life. If anyone can help me to understand my dreams please write. Thank God for this website.

I'm doing some research about coma and I'd to know if you know something about the following case. Is that true? Because I found it only in the Miami Herald and it was so hard to find. My brother has been in a coma for 6 weeks. We have come across a problem where he is notdoing well enough for rehab but doing too well for intensive care. We are checking in to nursing care facilities but they are always full or would not have the staff to give him the care and stimulation he needs. What do we do? We know that he can get through this but not without the proper care and stimulation. Thank you for your site, it has really helped me understand what my brother is going through.

My younger (22yrs) sister LESLIE was in an auto accident on 10/25/99 -- she suffered major brain damamge and is still in a vegitative state. It seems like she is progressing: small smiles, very small movement on command, a little more response to stimulation. However, my family is still getting the "Run Around" from her physicians, the medical staff and supposed social workers... Please advise me on rehab programs, coma stimulation programs or anything else I can access for my sister (we live on the West Coast). Also, all of you who have shared your amazing stories -- my family thanks you for your continued strength and faith, it gives us hope.

My husband Mike and I were in a fatal car crash Feb 25,1995. Mike remains in a semi-comatose state. Due to my faith and patience my husband is where he due to me. Last year we started to see a neurologist. This year he ordered Physical and occupational therapy. My husband stood vertical for the fist time in almost 5 years on Jan 17,2000. Anyone out there that would like to write to me please do. I have felt so alone for so long. Thank you for this web site.

At age 39, I had a massive heart attack that required 3 shocks from the paddles and a CLOT BUSTER shot to basically bring me back. I slipped into a coma due to length of time I was w/out oxygen and remained there 20 days, at which time, my family was notified that brain scans showed no activity and to find me a nursing home to live the "remainder of my life" in. However, 2 days after this bleak diagnosis, I opened my eyes and started talking and haven't stopped yet. I am by no stretch of the imagination able to do all the things I did prior to the heart attack, BUT I am able to function as a mother & wife and to care for my family. I won't say the journey was an easy one, but with family support, it's a journey worth making. My heart attack was 3 years ago but we STILL see small improvements in me. My best advice is to NEVER GIVE UP and prepare for the changes you will experience in your life. You are not the same person and you must mourn the loss but you also must put your trust in God and believe in yourself!

I was in a horse-back riding accident on 06-30-98,and recieved a TBI, the doctors gave my family little hope if any, said I wouldn't return back to college, but I have just completed my 1st semester and got a 3.0 so the doctors don't know everything, their is one doctor that saved me, the GREAT PHYSICIAN GOD!! I was in a coma for 6 weeks and came out just fine, I drive, live by myself, eat what ever I want, and YES, still riding horses!

Our son was in a coma for 6 long weeks. He suffered a shearing brain injury in an auto accident. The doctors said he would not probably wake up. Well he did and is ok he remembers all the people who have come to see him. He is truly a testimate to the power of prayer and faith in god. Keep the faith! The doctors don't always know all the answers.

I am 24 years old and was recently in the Intensive Care Unit in coma for almost one week because of brain edema. During that time, the doctors said it would take a miracle for me to come out of it. Meanwhile, my brain (or soul?) was having awful nightmares about being kidnapped and tortured. I woke up hallucinating and, once I was able to reason, I realized that the characters in my nightmare were the doctors and nurses in that had been treating me. It has been a very strong experience and I have been trying to find bibliography about coma patients who, unnoticedly are actually connected with what is going on around them. I would like to write something about especially for doctors who don“t seem to take this connection into consideration. Please, anyone who knows anything about this subject or who would like to share their experience with me, let me know. Thanks.

Our 14 year old daughter was in an MVA October 10, 1999. She sufferd a Hypoxic brain injury and is still in Coma. She has to date received 41 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapies along with daily PT, OT and Speech therapy. She is making small steps of improvement. We are going to transfer her from the Skilled Nursing Facility that she is currently in now to an acute care facility that specializes in TBI therapy/stimulation. We will also continue the HBO tharapy to complete at least 100 treatments. We understand that recovery for this type of injury is lengthy and after approximately 6-10 weeks in the acute rehab facility are preparing to take her home and continue treatment on an out patient basis. This site is an inspiration and provides great information an insight to the future for recovery. May God Bless and Keep you. Our prayer go out for those that are in similiar circumstances as our family.

My sister-in-law was in a coma for over two weeks, and then described as being in a vegatative state for another 3 weeks. Her neurologist told us their was 0% chance of recovery and that we should start thinking about how long "she would want to live this way". Well, now, two months after her injury, she is walking, talking, laughing and joking with us. She has a lot motor skill and short term memory problems and will need a lot of therapy, but she is BACK! I just want to say to anyone who has a family member going through something similiar, NEVER GIVE UP HOPE, and if you are dealing with negative doctors who are too willing to give up, don't let them do it. Doctors are often WRONG. Have strength and don't listen to doctors, therapist, neurologists, insurance companies or anyone else who tells you there is no hope.

I have been looking for information about coma, induced coma and stages of coming out of a coma. "Your Documents" & "Discussion" sections are very useful. My husband has suffered an aneurysm Sept. 22, 99 and is progressing along. Confussion, delirium, aggitation, and agression. These symptoms are slowly improving and I have great hope for his future, and I do respect the noted fact that it will take a very, very long time for him to adjust. I also would like to note the entry submitted by 'Peter Buckingham.' He has given me great insight into my husbands descriptions to me about what he is going through. If you get anything at all from this posting, it is to tell you to never give up hope for anyone who has sustained a head injury. One can always improve, in their time; not ours. The Lord be with you all.

My sister-in-law, 26 years old with two small children, has been in a coma since Oct 15th due to an anoxic brain injury caused by a doctor giving her the wrong drug. The drug she was given caused her heart to stop beating and she stopped breathing for several minutes before the doctor realized what he had done. We are moving her to the James Brady Institute next week. Any one who has had any experience with that facility and/or with coma stimulation therapies or hyperbaric oxygen therapies, I would be interested in hearing from you.

My older brother and I were in a car accident in 1985. My brother was 16 years old at the time. They care flighted my brother to the hospital because of the severe open head trauma. We were told that he would not make it through the surgery, where they would remove the whole left temporal lobe of his brain. He did make it through the surgery and remained in a coma for almost a year. My mom and I read from the Bible to him every day in intensive care. He started breathing on his own eventually and regained consciousness. My brother is 31 years old now and living an almost normal life. He lost his speech due to the severe brain stem damage, but is able to communicate in other ways. He is in a wheelchair, but walks with assistance. I believe that his recovery was largely due to his family and their support. I have been taking care of my brother for the last 6 years in our mother's house 73 hours a week. I have a 10 month old daughter who I bring to work with me. I cannot imagine not having my brother home with his family. Even though he will never be the way he used to be, he will always be my brother and I will always be here for him. My mom had a quadruple by-pass on August 20th. Pulled through that great but then within 24-48 hours she developed ARDS. She was placed back in ICU and back on the ventilator. She developed ICU psychosis and while they had her sedated she got confused and pulled on the tube pulling it from 1 of her lungs. She is now in a coma. (32 days today). No rehabs would take her cuz they said she had to be able to progress rapidly so we were forced to place her in a nursing home. A good one if I might add. I did my damnest searching for the right place. My mom was without oxygen to her brain for what they say was about 10-15 minutes. What shall I expect? Anyone with a similar situation please mail me. Thanks and keep up the faith everyone and add my mom to your list when you pray. Thanks

When my father suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury in March 1999, I searched for the best, most un-biased, most current information on the internet in order to understand what had happened to him and to evaluate what kind of recover was likely or possible. This website, and the people behind it, are the kindest, most compassionate I encountered in my entire experience with every manner of professional and non-professional involved in any aspect of brain injury. They strive to acquire, maintain and disseminate the most accurate information available. The information provided to me made it possible to hope while waiting for the truth to reveal itself. Despite my father's unfortunate death from complications on 9/17/99, I will always remember their unlimited assistance & concern. My father suffered a massive stroke over 8 months ago, which resulted with him being in coma and then a vegetative state for an unknown quantity of time. It was left to the family to convince the doctors that my father had infact emerged from the Vegetative state, and was 'alert' although tetraplegic, blind, unable to speak or swallow. It has been the hardest time of my life, particularly with the lack of empathy of the medical profession, and the lack of useful information, support groups and services available for the family. It is unfortunate that I should be so grateful to find such a website, but I am. Thankyou for letting me feel like I am not on my own, fighting to give my father some 'quality'of life, for his remaining life. I wish all the other families coping with their grief and loss strength and peace. Thankyou.

I work as an occupational therapist in one of the best Brazilian general hospitals and I am establishing the OT Dept. there. I was recently invited to start working with patients in coma and your homepage helped me a lot. Please, keep sending me your news.

My 21 yo college student was involved in an auto accident on 1-17-99. She still remains unresponsive. I don't know how to cope with the uncertainty. She received a 1cm contusion to the left frontal lobe, that healed within days. What is going on?
