- Steven Laureys study on vegetative state (6 patients) (http://www.apnet.com/www/journal/hbm2000/5992.html) "The disconnected cortical areas
(frontal, parietal and cingulate cortices) are among the most affected brain regions in VS.2 This observation suggests that cortical
dysfunction in VS patients might be due not only to a local neuronal loss but also to a decreased afferent drive from thalamo-cortical fibers.
This conjecture entails that conscious experience would in part rely on functional properties of the networks involving the thalamus and
different (frontal and parietal) associative cortical regions, which are involved in various consciousness-related functions (conscious
perception, attention, working memory, episodic memory and language)."
- Unlocking Locked-In Syndrome - sfn.org "Patients with complete paralysis, or locked-in syndrome, spend life mute. Often these conscious individuals are unable
to relay even their most basic wishes because they have lost all muscle control. Now years of research on animals and
humans is leading to the development of imaginative communication strategies for these patients. Several techniques that bypass the muscles and gain power directly
from the brain are under investigation."

Brent Partridge's Website "We sat backed and waited for Brent to return so we can go home as the wind had not been that strong to fly and we were to return home. To the left of me I saw a youngster go down the hill and then I heard those fateful words " He's fallen". Sam scrambled down and the next words I heard were "He's still alive "…………. Call the emergency services. I ran along the footpath at the top of the hill and asked two youngsters to please phone the emergency services."
A Miracle for Kimmie "
Kimmie is now out of her coma and has gone home from rehab August 7th! We've watched a miracle as it has unfolded...and are still watching it daily. Please read Kimmie's story, including all updates (in order)...if you want an inspiring story of love, hope, personal triumph, and miracles!" {Kim's Aunt also posted updates on our prayer page - she's a sweet lady}
LIVING MEMORIES "During his workday as a Wilmington police officer, Larry Redding was involved in a near-fatal car crash.
Not even expected to live, he remained comatose for weeks following the accident. To the amazement of his doctors and family, Larry emerged from the coma, and set out to regain his physical and mental strength. The following series of photographs illustrate his struggle and triumph."
Why I talk to comatose patients. "The news of Henry Baker's admission to intensive care distressed me. Henry, a retired executive whom I'd treated for a neurogenic bladder, had been my patient and friend for many years. His family had known mine for three generations. Henry was a delightful old fellow: Despite parkinsonism that had diminished his mobility, he retained an active mind and a lively sense of humor."
Coma Patient Help Sue's mom left a legacy that will help both coma patients and their families.
Update on Leah " On Monday December 13 around 7:35 AM Leah was Driving to school on a one way that intersected with Medicine Lake Ridge Road. She was struck on the driver’s side door. She was immediately rushed to North Memorial Hospital. She was in a coma and has suffered brain trauma. Leah is doing well. She is recovering slowly but nicely. "
Coma Diaries On May 27, 1999, my husband was hit by a car and has been in a coma ever since. I am educating myself on brain injuries and comas as much as possible. I have started this web page to hopefully meet others who are/were in this situation, who want to learn or can teach through support and education.
