Therapeutic Massage Awakening

Sharon M. McCarthy
Licensed Massage Therapist
#002612 N.Y.S.

Throughout my 18 years of practicing massage, I have seen so many new areas where massage is being used, such as: Orthopedic, Chiropractic and Physical Therapy offices and Nursing Homes.

Many massage therapists now specialize in specific fields of therapy.

I specialize with the head injured patient and I will list the benefits derived from a treatment.

  • Massage can compensate in part for lack of exercise and muscle contraction in persons who are forced to remain inactive.

  • Massage helps to return venous blood to the heart and so eases the strain on these vital organs.

  • It acts as a mechanical pump "cleanser" stimulating lymph circulation and hastening the elimination of wastes and toxic debris.

  • Prior to Physical and Occupational therapies massage can be used to warm up the muscles thus enhancing R.O.M. which is used to prevent or minimize permanent contractures.

According to my experience, hospitals today should recognize the intense benefits given by a "Licensed Massage Therapist" in conjunction with other therapies offered to the head injury patient.
